Overview

This is an introductory course on computer networking, specifically the Internet. It focuses on modern network protocols, ranging from low-level protocols such as Ethernet to application protocols based on HTTP. The course also grounds many of the concepts currently used in practice, such as DNS security, dynamic routing, or load balancing.

Learning highlights

  • After completing this course, students should be able to read and understand RFCs, implement their own networking tools and protocols, configure network hardware, as well as be able to recognize common security threats.

Prerequisites

This course is one of three in a wholistic series.

Students that have already taken MSL-111 and those with prior experience with HTML, CSS, and Javascript building simple web pages will be good candidates for this module.

Nick is a software engineer with over a decade of experience focusing on distributed systems and software correctness. He studied Information Security at ITMO University in St. Petersburg, Russia, and is currently working at SPB TV Solutions, where he applies high-level instruments to low-level problems.

Nick’s areas of expertise are in Content Delivery Systems, Data Storage, DBMS, and Network Software.
